A Government Land Office was established as westward expansion caught fire in the United States. The office was tasked with the responsibility of dividing up the new land and selling it off; survey teams were dispatched to mark off sections along the way.
Using 66-foot-long chains, a transit and a compass, these teams set stone monuments at the corners of each section and mid-points of each mile-long side.
Care and attention is paid by private and government surveyors to these important monuments in order to preserve and perpetuate these monuments. As large plots of land are divided and subdivided, the boundaries are based upon the original monuments.
